Abdominal Ultrasound
An abdominal ultrasound produces images of the organs and structures within the abdomen. It may be recommended to investigate abdominal pain, swelling or other symptoms requiring further assessment.

Breast Ultrasound
A breast ultrasound is used to examine breast tissue and investigate concerns such as lumps or changes in the breast. It may be performed as part of a broader breast assessment.

Musculoskeletal Ultrasound
Musculoskeletal ultrasound helps examine muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints and soft tissues. It may support the assessment of pain, swelling, injuries or restricted movement.

Pelvic Ultrasound
A pelvic ultrasound provides images of the organs and structures within the pelvis. It may be recommended to investigate pelvic pain, menstrual concerns or other gynaecological symptoms.

Pregnancy Scan
Pregnancy scans use ultrasound imaging to support the assessment and monitoring of a pregnancy. The appropriate type of scan will depend on the stage of pregnancy and the clinical reason for the appointment.

Thyroid Ultrasound
A thyroid ultrasound examines the thyroid gland and surrounding area of the neck. It may be recommended to assess swelling, nodules or other changes requiring further investigation.

- Unexplained swelling or tenderness
- A breast lump or changes in breast tissue
- Muscle, tendon or joint pain
- Soft-tissue injuries or restricted movement
- Irregular periods or other menstrual concerns
- Thyroid swelling or a lump in the neck

What to Expect During Your Appointment
Before Your Scan
Preparation instructions depend on the type of ultrasound you are having. Our team will explain whether you need to fast, drink water or follow any other guidance before your appointment.
During Your Appointment
A clinician applies ultrasound gel to the relevant area and gently moves a handheld probe across the skin to produce images. Ultrasound does not use ionising radiation.
After Your Scan
Your ultrasound images will be reviewed, and you will receive information about the next appropriate steps based on the findings.
